People often ask how Victor and I met each other and I always start the story by saying “the amazon jungle in the middle of nowhere”. As mentioned in my Sunday Confessions 5 I dont believe in coincidences but yes, this random place on earth was where I met him.
So what was I doing there? I was travelling 1 month alone in Colombia, wasn’t looking for anyone, I just came out of a relationship 3 months earlier and this trip was kind of a personal journey where I had to re-discover how to be alone again. I was approaching my last week in Colombia and my plan was going to Leticia to visit the Amazon Jungle, but I was still in doubt of whether I should go or not because both the flight and the stay there were really expensive. At the end I decided to go and from Leticia I had to take first a boat to Brazil, then a taxi and then another boat to reach this lodge in the middle of the jungle beside the Amazon river.
I CHANGED MY VOLUNTEER TO VICTOR
There I had my own local guide and a voluntary who organised the activities during the days for me. Victor worked there as voluntary as well, but when I arrived he was walking in the jungle with 2 French people. I met him on the second day where we small talked a bit during the day. Victor has a big interest taking pictures of birds and he was on his way to a viewpoint to take pictures. I was going there as well and we just start talking – well, at first the birds were more interesting than me, but when he got tired of the birds I got the attention 😉 The connexion between us was amazing and we just talked all day about everything.
At night I was going on some night jungle tours to search for nocturne animals with my guide and volunteer, but I didn’t wanted to bring my volunteer with me. The volunteer was a young and lazy guy who had a “I dont wanna do this” attitude when we did the tours, and I didn’t want to pay for that kind of attitude. I therefore asked Victor if he wanted to join me instead. These night walks in the jungle searching for nocturne animals in complete darkness were magical and some of the best experiences I had in the jungle and I was lucky to share them with Victor.
When I went back to Leticia he went with me and we stayed some days there visiting some of the villages around the Amazon river. This connexion we had was very special – everything just seemed natural like if we had already lived together in an earlier life. After 6 amazing days at the Amazon I had to take my flight back to Bogotá. I was approaching the end of my trip and had to go back to Denmark.
We kept having contact back home, but it didn’t seem possible to build up any relationship since he was in the jungle until he had to go back to Chile and I was in Denmark searching for a new job. But we wrote daily when the wifi connexion was with us (the wifi in the jungle is not that good I can tell. But a wonder that is even exist!).
THE QUESTION THAT CHANGED MY ORIGINAL PLANS
Back in Denmark I decided that I wanted to go back to Medellín, a city in Colombia that I fell completely in love with. I wanted to search for a job there and stay in an ulimited time. I told Victor about my decision and his answer changed everything. He asked if I wanted to give whatever we had a chance and go to Chile instead. At that time I had never been to Chile, didn’t know much about the country either. But I felt like we had a very special connexion between us and one thing I had learned this year was so listen more to my heart than to what seems rational. I mean, most people maybe won’t think going to the end of the world, to a country you dont know with someone you only met for some days in the jungle is the most rational decision to make. But my heart told me I should go for it. I talked to my wise mom about it and she supported me (what a cool mom I have!).
And the decision was made.
I went to Chile in September. And here I am. Approaching November 🙂
I think this could be the best decision I ever made.
p.s. Victor also changes all his plans: he skipped his skiing season in Chile and went to Denmark for 1 month to spend time with me, get to know my country, my friends and his new Danish family 🙂
