Most people only go North from Puerto Natales to discover the national park Torres del Paine but there are so many other places to discover that are less known and less touristic. Instead of going north, go south from Puerto Natales. Take the beautiful road to Seno Obstrucción. Its actually another road to Punta Arenas they are building on, but it will take longer time to get there because its a gravel road. You will be driving along the coast most of the way and have a beautiful scenery on both sides of the road. On the way you will pass some ranches as well.
HOW TO GET TO SENO OBSTRUCCION
Its pretty easy and almost impossible to get lost. We actually got lost because we took a wrong road.. so maybe I should´t say that.. But if you read this post first you will not get lost! From Puerto Natales you take the street Almte. Latorre and continue on route Y340. You just continue, enjoy the nature, the wildlife, observe the estancias (ranches) and suddenly you end up in Seno Obstruction. No turning right or left on roads that look less road-ish than route Y340! Its only around 45km from Puerto Natales but since its a gravel road it takes like 1.5 hours to go all the way to Seno Obstrucción.
REMOTE NATURE AND POSSIBILITY FOR CAMPING
In Seno Obstruccion you can use like 15 minutes walking around. Its a small village and not much to see or do, its more the experience of imagining people living here and having their daily life. There are a few houses and even a school with 2 students! But no shops. So are you as forgetful as I was and forget the dinner, then sorry – no food for you! I felt like a little kid when we had wine, chips and chocolate for dinner.. Victor was less impressed, I think he had looked very much forward to wine, cheese and bread.. Oops..
10 minutes drive on the way back from Seno Obstrucción we put up our tent. Here we enjoyed some mate (Argentinian herbal drink) and later on had our.. well.. dessert since I forgot the dinner. In the morning we took the car back to Puerto Natales.
Good luck with your adventures!
